"Ed Overboard" is the 7th episode of Season 4 and the 84th episode of Ed, Edd n Eddy. In this episode, Lee and Marie kidnap Ed as a gift for a highly upset May after they ruin her appearance in a prank. The two remaining Eds must utilize all available resources to get their friend back.

Plot[]

In the Kankers' trailer, May is ready to receive a makeover from her sisters. When it's over and May looks in the mirror, however, she finds out that her sisters making her beautiful have instead pranked her and wrecked her looks. May flies into a terrible tantrum and starts throwing things at her sisters, who hide behind the sofa. This doesn't deter May, who continues to throw things until she finds herself holding her Ed doll. Seeing this, May breaks out crying, afraid that Ed will never love her. Marie and Lee, feeling slightly remorseful for May, try to comfort her.

Meanwhile, the Eds have set up a scam based on selling arts-and-crafts outside Edd's House. Ed is perfectly happy to make macaroni art, but Eddy is irritated as the scam hasn't yet brought in any paying customers. Eddy and Edd gets into an argument over the profitability of such a venture and its' chances at success when they're distracted by Ed having glued his head to the table. At that moment, Lee and Marie appear and, without much ado, carry off the table with Ed still stuck on it. Edd is horrified by this and as is Eddy, too. Their reactions are polar opposites, however; while Edd wants to help out his kidnapped friend, Eddy thinks that it would be better to just pretend they haven't seen anything and ask him for his help with arts. Realizing his offhand comment, gives Edd an idea and he drags Eddy away from the arts-and-crafts table.

At Rolf's place, Rolf is collecting tree sap. Edd and Eddy runs up and was out of breath, he is trying to explain about what's going on. Rolf takes this in stride and then jumps into his barrel of sap. Edd is perturbed by this, only to be caught by surprise when Rolf leaps out of an oil barrel behind them, clothed in his Urban Rangers uniform. Rolf then declares that the Urban Rangers will rescue the missing Ed and proceeds to call them. Upset, Eddy is about to deliver an ultimatum to Edd about the Urban Rangers when Jonny, Jimmy, and Plank rush in, trampling Eddy along the way. Rolf then outlines the situation to them, but tells them there is no badge, much to their surprise. Jimmy and Jonny are taken back until Rolf shows them their reward: the Freeing of the Fool Pewter Medallion. Jimmy and Jonny ooh and ahh over this, but Eddy is disgusted that they'd only work for badges. Rolf is irked by this and when the time comes to go out on their mission he holds Eddy and Edd back, declaring it official Urban Ranger business. Edd makes a case for allowing them to help, since Ed is their friend and Rolf relents, deputizing them into Rangerhood before slamming the book on their hands.

At the Park n' Flush, Ed has been tied to a tree by Lee and Marie until they bring May. May is thrilled to see Ed and begins torturing him. When the six rescuers come in, Eddy sniggers at his friend's predicament. Rolf then sets out to execute the plan. Rolf first starts by going over and calling some attention to the wreck that the Kankers' grill has become and then proceeds to start polishing it. Lee and Marie naturally starts to swoon over a man in uniform polishing their grill and Lee grabs May so she can enjoy the show. While the Kankers observe Rolf's work, the other three Rangers goes over to Ed and start to untie him. Ed is naturally happy about this, but doesn't get the point, suggesting that they go for help. Jonny tries to tell him that they are the help, but Ed ignores him, instead saying that he'll distract the Kankers so they can go for help. Ed begins loudly singing and the Kankers are naturally enough distracted. Unfortunately, they're distracted by Ed and they catch the rescuers in the act with May charging and attacking them before she held them to her sisters, causing Ed to point out that they weren't supposed to get caught. Lee notices that the Rangers are wearing the same uniform as Rolf and after a few shoddy excuses, they implement "code yellow evasive maneuvers", which consist of catching a quick sickness and falling down dead. At first, May assumes the rangers are dead and a about continue her work with Ed, but Marie is smart enough to know that they aren't dead where the rangers become anxious.

Shorty thereafter, Eddy, amused, laughs at this pitiful display and then tells Edd that they're leaving back home. But Edd refuses and pressured after he stands strong and saying that they won't leave without Ed. Eddy then gives in without second thoughts, although he threatens to beat up Edd if they get caught which he appreciates his Cooperation. After Marie starts shaking Jimmy violently to inspect him and the three rangers dead, Lee smacks him off her hand, saying that it's not how to inspect if they're dead and suggesting that they should stare at them, which their mother said to them and they begin to do so. While the Kankers are distracted by the Urban Rangers, the Eds goes out, sneaks past them with a bush full of gardening tools, stealthily uproot the tree that Ed is tied to and pull him away on the wagon.

Later that dawn, the Eds are in the Playground where Edd is cleaning the crayon stains and kiss marks off of Ed. While cleaning Ed, he finds a bandage on his back. At first, Edd is worried that he assumes the Kankers harmed his friend, but upon hearing it was Ed's doing, he decides to peel it off. Underneath is a cookie, which Ed eats, claiming he saved it for awhile. Edd is initially disgusted by this, but soon, remembering who Ed is at heart and claims it's good to have Ed back. Edd is then distracted by Eddy guffawing at the fate of the Urban Rangers and they get into an argument. Meanwhile, the Urban Rangers capture Ed and leave, seeking revenge for the disgrace inflicted on their bodies, much to Edd's shock and Eddy's bewilderment. Good and fed up, Eddy declares that he's leaving and goes in the opposite direction while Edd tries to convince the Rangers not to do whatever they're about to do to Ed, instead preferring Eddy as a target.

Trivia[]

  • Goofs:
    • When Ed shouts "Hooray!" the writing on his chest briefly changes from "May luvs Ed" to "May luys Ed". The writing changes again to "May luve Ed" just before Ed blows Jimmy and Johnny's cover.
    • Marie's belt is black instead of pink when shaking Jimmy, and staring at the Urban Rangers playing dead.
  • In a fit of rage, May throws a Vancouver snow globe at her sisters. This references the location of the show's production company, A.K.A. Cartoon.
  • May holds the Ed Junior doll from "Nagged to Ed".
  • The Kankers use a "Toomey" brand cigar box to hold their crayons. The brand name is a reference to Cory Toomey, one of the series' prop designers.
    • Also inside the box is a hand drawn picture of one of their dads.
  • Eddy breaks the fourth wall when he says, "I'd swear, but standards won't let me."
  • Eddy references Harry Houdini after Rolf rapidly changes into his Urban Ranger uniform.
  • When Jimmy learns that there will be no badge for freeing Ed, he states "Something smells rotten in Denmark." This is a reference to the Shakespeare play Hamlet, in which the character Marcellus states, "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark."
    • Another reference to Hamlet comes in the form of one of Ed’s macaroni art pieces, called To Noodle or Not to Noodle. This is a reference to the famous phrase “to be or not to be”.
  • The way that Ed is tied upside-down to a tree is shown again in the final scene of the Game Boy Advance version of Ed, Edd n Eddy: The Mis-Edventures.
